What is Central slip injury?

  • Central Slip Injury is an injury to the central slip of the extensor tendon, which helps straighten the finger at the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint. It commonly occurs due to a direct blow, forced bending of the finger, or sports-related trauma.
  • Symptoms include pain, swelling, and difficulty straightening the middle joint of the finger. If left untreated, it may lead to a Boutonnière deformity, in which the PIP joint bends while the fingertip joint (DIP) hyperextends.
  • Diagnosis is based on clinical examination and sometimes X-rays to identify associated fractures. Treatment may include splinting the PIP joint in full extension, usually for several weeks, or surgery in severe cases, followed by rehabilitation to restore finger function.
